On both platforms the pattern is the same: locking and status queries by voice are straightforward, and unlocking is deliberately restricted — Alexa requires a spoken voice code where it allows unlock at all, and Google requires additional verification. Which Schlage® models are exposed to each assistant is something we have not independently verified, so treat model support as unconfirmed until you have checked it against your own lock.

What is the same on both platforms

"Lock the front door" works with no additional authentication. Locking is a safe operation — the worst case is a locked door.
"Is the front door locked?" returns bolt state, subject to the same polling delay any cloud integration has.
Unlock is gated. Voice is trivially spoofable through a window or a smart speaker, so both platforms treat unlock as a privileged action.
Routines can include locking on a schedule or as part of a goodnight or leaving-home routine.
Everything runs through the vendor cloud, so an internet outage takes voice control with it — the keypad and physical key are unaffected.

Alexa specifics

Alexa's smart lock support is built around an optional four-digit voice code. With one configured, unlock requires you to speak it; without one, Alexa refuses unlock requests entirely. Locking never requires the code.

Setup is the usual pattern: enable the vendor skill in the Alexa app, sign in with your lock account, and discover devices. Give the lock a name you will actually say — 'front door' beats 'Schlage Encode deadbolt'.

Be aware that anyone within earshot of the speaker can lock the door, and anyone who overhears your voice code can unlock it. If the speaker is near an open window, do not enable unlock at all.

Google Assistant specifics

Google treats locks as a secure device class: lock and query are ordinary commands, unlock requires additional verification, and on shared or guest speakers unlock is generally unavailable. Setup runs through Google Home: add the device, link the account, then assign the lock to a room.

Naming matters here too, and Google is more literal about rooms — a lock assigned to the wrong room makes 'lock the doors' behave unpredictably.

If your model is not supported

The fallback on both platforms is a bridge. Home Assistant reaches Schlage locks through the cloud API with roughly 30-second polling and can expose them to Alexa and Google as generic lock entities. Apple households with an Encode Plus or Sense already have Siri through Apple Home and generally do not need this.

Whether you should enable voice unlock at all

Our view: no, on an exterior door. The convenience is modest — you are already at the door and a keypad code takes three seconds — while the attack surface is a device that listens to a room. Enable voice locking and status queries, leave unlocking to the keypad, the app, or Home Key.
