There are four ways to control a Schlage® lock day to day: the official Schlage® Home app, Apple Home on the models that support HomeKit, Home Assistant through the cloud API, and third-party apps such as ours. Only the official app can enrol a lock, manage codes and push firmware — everything else layers on top of it. Choose based on which model you own, because the Encode Plus and the standard Encode have genuinely different options.

Apple Home

Available on the Encode Plus and the Sense; not on the standard Encode BE488/BE489, which has no HomeKit support at all. This single fact decides the question for most people, and it is the most common misconception we see.

Where it applies, Apple Home is excellent: local control, fast response over Thread on the Encode Plus, Home Key, Siri, real automations, and shared access through your existing family setup. Its limits are that it does not manage keypad codes and does not update firmware.

Encode Plus over Thread also runs well over a year on batteries, against roughly two to three months for the Wi-Fi Encode. Connectivity choice is a battery decision as much as an app one.

Home Assistant

Works with Schlage locks through the cloud API, polling state roughly every 30 seconds. That gives you scripting, dashboards across multiple properties, code automation, and re-export into Apple Home for models that lack native HomeKit.

The costs are real: you run a server, the integration depends on Schlage's cloud rather than talking to the lock locally, and the 30-second polling makes it feel slow next to a local HomeKit connection. Worth it if you already run Home Assistant; a large commitment if you do not.

Third-party apps, including ours

A third-party client signs into your existing lock account and gives you a different interface over the same capabilities. The reasons to use one are widgets and watch complications, a faster path to lock or unlock than opening the official app, a cleaner activity view, and a multi-home switcher.

The reasons not to are equally clear: it cannot enrol a lock or update firmware, it depends on the same cloud as everything else, and it is another party in your account. Judge any such app — including ours — on what it says about data handling before you sign in.

How to choose

Encode Plus or Sense in an Apple household: Apple Home for daily use, official app for codes and firmware. Add a third-party app only if you want widgets or a watch face control.
Standard Encode in an Apple household: no HomeKit, so the choice is the official app, a third-party app, or Home Assistant bridging into Apple Home.
Android: official app plus a third-party app, or Home Assistant if you want automation.
Several properties: Home Assistant for the dashboard, or a third-party app with a home switcher if you want to stay off servers.
You want it to just work with no thought: stay on the official app. It is the only one guaranteed to support every feature of your lock.

What none of them fix

If the lock's Wi-Fi is marginal, or the batteries are low, or the cloud is having a bad day, every app on this page fails in the same way, because they all reach the lock through the same path. Fix the connection before you change client.
