Schlage® Lock Automations: Auto-Lock, Geofencing, and Door Sensors

Auto-lock is the one automation every Schlage® smart lock does by itself, on a timer, with no platform involved. Everything more interesting — arrival routines, door-sensor pairing, conditional locking at night — needs a home platform, which means Apple Home on the Encode Plus or Sense, or Home Assistant on the standard Encode. Automate locking freely; never automate unlocking without a confirmation step.

There is a rule worth stating before anything else: locking is safe to automate, unlocking is not. Every automation below is built around that asymmetry.

Auto-lock: the built-in one

Auto-lock re-locks the bolt a set time after it is unlocked, and it runs on the lock itself rather than in the cloud, so it keeps working during an internet outage. It is configured per lock in the Schlage® Home app, and on HomeKit models it can also be set from Apple Home. [VERIFY: the available timer intervals per model.]

The trade-off is battery and mechanical wear: a short timer on a busy door means many extra motor cycles a day. It is also the classic way to lock yourself out while taking the bins out, so consider whether everyone in the household has a code memorised before choosing thirty seconds.

Auto-lock throws the bolt whether or not the door is actually closed unless a door sensor tells it otherwise. On a door that sticks, that means the bolt hits the frame.

Door sensors: worth adding

A contact sensor on the door frame turns a blind timer into a real condition. In Apple Home or Home Assistant you can then build: if the door has been closed for two minutes and the lock is unlocked, lock it — and its useful inverse, if the door is open, do not attempt to lock.

You can also alert on the genuinely dangerous state that a lock alone cannot detect: door left open. A lock reports bolt position, not door position; the two are different facts and only the sensor knows the second one.

Geofencing and arrival

Geofenced automations fire on location, and location is approximate. A geofence that unlocks your front door can trigger while you are still in the car park, or when your phone briefly reports a bad fix. We do not recommend it on any exterior door.

The safe pattern is: on arrival, send a notification with an unlock action, or run a scene that turns on lights and prepares the house while leaving the door alone. On departure, lock everything unconditionally — that one is free of risk.

If you want hands-free entry, use Home Key on the Encode Plus. It requires physical presence at the door, which is the property a geofence can never have.

What you can build on each platform

  • Schlage app alone: auto-lock timer, access schedules per user, notifications. No conditional logic, no cross-device triggers.
  • Apple Home (Encode Plus, Sense): time-based, person-arrives, person-leaves, accessory-state and sensor-based automations; scenes; shortcuts; conditions on time of day and who is home.
  • Home Assistant (any model with cloud API access, roughly 30-second state polling): arbitrary logic, presence detection from multiple sources, notifications with actions, and re-export into Apple Home.
  • Alexa and Google routines: voice-triggered and schedule-triggered locking; unlock is typically gated behind a spoken PIN where it is permitted at all.

Three automations worth having

  • Nightly check at 23:00 — if the lock is unlocked, lock it and notify. Catches the door nobody locked without ever unlocking anything.
  • Everyone has left — lock the door. Trigger on the last person leaving rather than on any single person.
  • Low battery — notify once a day until batteries are replaced, rather than a single alert you swipe away and forget.

Polling latency is real

On cloud-based integrations the lock's state is polled rather than pushed, around every 30 seconds on the Home Assistant integration. Automations that depend on knowing instantly that the door was just unlocked will feel sluggish. Local platforms — HomeKit over Thread — report changes far faster.

Common questions

Does the Schlage app support automations?
Only auto-lock timers, per-user access schedules and notifications. Anything conditional needs Apple Home or Home Assistant.
Can I make my Schlage lock unlock when I get home?
Technically yes on a home platform, but we advise against it. Location triggers are imprecise and the failure mode is an unlocked front door. Use Home Key on the Encode Plus for hands-free entry instead.
Does auto-lock work without internet?
Yes. The timer runs on the lock itself, so it is unaffected by an internet or cloud outage.
Do I need a door sensor?
Not to use auto-lock, but it makes it much better: with a sensor the lock can be told not to throw the bolt against an open door, and you can be alerted when the door is left open.
Why is my automation slow to notice the door was unlocked?
Cloud integrations poll rather than push — roughly every 30 seconds on Home Assistant. Local control over Thread in Apple Home is much faster.
