Which Schlage® Locks Actually Work With Apple Watch

• Encode deadbolt (BE488/BE489): official Schlage Watch app — lock, unlock, status. No Apple Home, so no Home app complication and no Home Key.
• Encode lever: same as the deadbolt — covered by the official Watch app.
• Encode Plus (BE499): not covered by the official Watch app. Control comes from Apple's Home app on Watch, and Home Key works on Apple Watch Series 4 or newer.
• Sense (BE479): not covered by the official Watch app. Apple Home on Watch handles it, with remote access requiring the Sense Wi-Fi Adapter or a home hub.

The rule of thumb: if the model is in Apple Home, use Apple's Watch app; if it is not, Schlage's Watch app may cover it.

Why Encode Plus has no official Watch app

Because it does not need one from Schlage's perspective. The Encode Plus is a HomeKit accessory, so Apple's own Home app on Apple Watch already offers lock, unlock and status, and Home Key offers something better still — walking up and tapping the Watch against the lock with no app at all.

It is defensible reasoning, but it does leave the product line looking inconsistent to anyone comparing spec sheets.

Home Key on Apple Watch

On the Encode Plus, a home key can be provisioned to Apple Watch Series 4 or newer. With Express Mode enabled you raise your wrist to the reader and the door unlocks — no app, no authentication prompt, and it works with a flat internet connection because the exchange is local NFC.

This is the fastest way to open a Schlage lock on any Apple device, and it is a strong argument for the Encode Plus if you wear a Watch.

Setting up whichever route applies to you

• Official Schlage Watch app: install the iPhone app first, sign in, then install the Watch companion from the Watch app's available-apps list. Add it as a complication for one-tap access.
• Apple Home on Watch: nothing to install. The lock appears once it is in your home; add a Home complication to the watch face for the accessory or a scene.
• Home Key: provisioned automatically to a paired Watch when the lock is added to the home. Check Wallet on the Watch and confirm Express Mode.

Practical limits

Watch control over cellular depends on the lock being reachable from the cloud, so an offline lock is offline from the Watch too. Unlock from a Watch requires the Watch to be unlocked and on your wrist, which is the correct security posture.

Expect a second or two of latency on a Wi-Fi model. Home Key is effectively instant because nothing leaves the doorstep.
