Schlage® Encode (BE489): Features, Limits and Known Issues
Wi-Fi only, no native Apple Home support. What the Encode deadbolt does well, where it fails, and every fix that applies to this model.

What it is
The Encode is Schlage's volume smart deadbolt (BE488) and lever (BE489): a keypad lock with Wi-Fi built into the interior escutcheon, so it needs no bridge or hub to be controlled remotely.
Connectivity
Wi-Fi only. It cannot be added to Apple Home natively — no HomeKit, no Home Key, no Siri, no Apple Home automations. Reachable through Schlage's cloud API (AWS Cognito auth), which is how the Home Assistant integration works; it polls lock state every 30 seconds.
What the official app can do
- Lock, unlock and read status remotely over Wi-Fi
- Create and manage access codes
- Show lock history and push notifications for lock events
- Show battery level on the main lock screens at all times
- Drive the official Apple Watch app — the Encode deadbolt and lever are the only models it supports
What it can't do
- Expose any action to Shortcuts; users trying to build a Shortcut find nothing available
- Bring the lock into Apple Home, so Siri and Home automations are out
- Avoid the first-party promotional banners Schlage added to the app
